River Rat Relay challenge on the Upper Mississippi

On the 100th anniversary of the Upper Mississippi Fish and Wildlife Refuge, explore the river and earn a challenge patch!

The River Rat Relay is officially underway! Discover and celebrate the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge during its 100th anniversary this summer by exploring the refuge and earning a patch.

The River Rat Relay is a self-led event that participants accomplish at their own pace. To complete the relay, participants must complete a challenge card by visiting the five locations listed on the card. Challenge cards can be picked up at the La Crosse District Visitor Center located on Brice Prairie during our summer hours, Tuesday thru Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., or digitally at https://www.fws.gov/refuge/upper-mississippi-river.

Participants have until August 31, 2024 to return their challenge cards. Once complete, participants can redeem their challenge cards for a commemorative River Rat Relay patch! These iron-on patches are a limited-time offering and are available for all who complete the relay.
